senior picThe scholarship I received from JCEF will allow me to focus on my education without having to worry about taking out more student loans. Every little bit helps, and I am so thankful for the GEAR UP scholarship that I received!

ABOUT BRIANNA
North Valley High School, Class of 2016
College: Oregon State University
Status: Freshman

Why I chose OSU: I chose this college because it has a great marine biology program.

Major: Right now, I am majoring in biology with an option in marine biology.
Why my major is a good fit for me: I’m interested in science and the natural world, especially the health of the oceans. I want to know more about the creatures that live in the coastal waters, on barrier reefs and migrate from place to place in deep water.

Classes taken in high school that helped prepared me for college and my major: I have taken calculus and AP Comp and literature. All of those classes were pretty rigorous and taught me to see what is to come in college and how to handle the work that I will be given.

High school activities, clubs or sports I was involved in: I was in Key Club and participated in Jefferson State Scavinger Hunt. I was also Swim Team captain for 2 years and served as secretary of National Honors Society.

Planned college activities: I want to row and hope to get involved on the Crew team. From personal research that I’ve done, I know it is possible to assist professors with field research. Given my interest in marine biology, I would like to search for sharks and participate in tagging them to better understand how they live and where they go. I want to have research and internship experiences that will expose me to different aspects of biology.

Scholarships I received: I received the $2,500 GEAR UP Scholarship which is renewable.
