Receiving the Bearss Scholarship has meant a lot to me. Without it, I would not have been able to attend the University of Oregon and seize all of the wonderful opportunities made available to me. With the scholarship support I was able to have an amazing and successful first year of college. Thanks for believing in me!
Grants Pass High School, Class of 2015
College: University of Oregon
Status: I am currently a sophomore.
Why I chose UO: I chose this college because I love the learning atmosphere on campus as well as the people. I knew the staff and faculty at UO would help me be academically successful along with helping me prepare for my career.
Major: I am currently a political science major. I chose this major because I want to make a difference in the community and I believe that through governmental systems, positive change can occur.
Why my major is a good fit for me: This major is a good fit for me because I have always been politically active and have stood up and fought for what I believe in. I am also meeting staff and faculty who are helping me reach my career aspirations, all while attending the college of my dreams.
College activities, clubs or sports: During my first year at the University of Oregon, I was in a club called UO College Dems where an internship at the Democratic Party of Lane County became available to me. In this internship I worked with elected officials, canvassed, phone banked, and entered data among many other things.
Volunteer or paid work that set me on this path: I secured an internship at the Democratic Party of Lane County, where I was elected as a Precinct Committee Person (PCP) and attended the State Delegate Convention this year. I knocked on the most doors for the Chris Wig for City Council Campaign. I learned a lot about the reality of working in politics, which is important for me as a political science major. The DPLC internship reassured me that this was the correct career path for me.
Scholarships I received: I received the Apex Scholarship from the University of Oregon. As a GPHS graduate from JCEF, I received the Ernest and Madge Bearss Scholarship (renewable for 4 years) and the John Voorhies Scholarship funded by Evergreen Federal Bank.
Thank you scholarship donors for putting me in the position I am today. Without your help I would not have been able to obtain an education at the university level. Specifically, I would not have been able to attend the University of Oregon, and all of the knowledge, experience, and opportunities that go hand in hand with that. I have grown so much in the past year and have truly become my own person. Thanks for believing in me!
