University: Oregon Institute of Technology
Major: Dental Hygiene
Scholarships Received from JCEF: Knights of Columbus and GEAR UP scholarships, Men’s Soccer Scholarship from Oregon Tech.
Why I chose OIT: The school is well known to graduate almost all of its students and the teachers are amazing. I’ve always wanted to go to a big university, but as I went on college visits I realized I enjoyed smaller universities and Oregon Tech was the perfect school. I am also on a soccer scholarship!
Experiences that impacted my career and education direction: I was going to see my dentist for my normal cleaning. My dentist was asking me what my college plans were and I had no specific major in mind. Then she told me that I should consider Dental Hygiene because they needed more men in the field. I laughed it off, but I got curious and looked into it! I’m glad I did because it seems to fit me really well.
Why this career objective is a good fit: I’ve been told I am a people person and I’ve always loved going to the dentist. I’ve always wanted to know how and why dental professionals do the things they do!
Experiences that set me on this career path: I didn’t job shadow a dentist but just being involved in many activities during high school (Choir, Soccer, Pep Band, and Hype Crew) led me to the awareness that I wanted to go to college and pursue a career or major where I could help people.
What I learned through participation in these activities: I learned great communication skills and leadership!
Activities, clubs, or sports I participated in during high school: I was Captain of my soccer team for my junior and senior year, and also got 1st team all-conference my junior and senior year and OSAA 2nd team All-State. I was in Free Design and Pep Band for 2 years. I also did Track & Field my senior year and earned 6th place for the 4×1 at the State Championship.
College activities, clubs, or sports: I am playing college soccer at OIT.
