Al Forthan Memorial Scholarship (Due Feb. 1)

  • One $10,000 scholarship open to an Oregon high school senior from a family affected by alcohol or drug addiction. Several other lesser amount scholarships will also be awarded-if applying for lesser awards, no letter of support is required.  The $10,000 scholarship is disbursed in $2,500 installments over 4 years.
  • Selection Criteria: Quality of various required written essays (go to web site noted below and download the scholarship flyer), Activity Chart (use a spreadsheet or a table to list all volunteer/community service work and high school activities and number of hours you have participated in those activities), Letter of Recommendation or support from teacher, coach, school counselor adult mentor, pastor describing your character and why they would recommend you for a scholarship, Financial Need (describe in a 1-page essay what income barriers you face in financing your higher education and how the scholarship will benefit you in reaching your goals.)
  • Other Requirements: Type out each of the 6 questions or statements, followed by your response. All essays should be typed and double spaced. Follow the page instructions provided for each essay. Put your name and school name on each essay.

  • About the Scholarship: Offered by the Volunteers of America-Oregon. In 2017, the Al Forthan Memorial Scholarship awarded $69,500 in scholarships to seniors from Oregon high schools. The purpose of the scholarship is to honor Al and encourage students to explore how addiction has impacted our community and think about solutions to this complex problem.
