  • Award: $250
  • Eligibility: Graduating senior from Hidden Valley High School
  • Selection Criteria: Demonstrated desire to pursue a career as a public school teacher, and/or commitment to social justice activism, with an interest in issues such as bullying, gender and income inequality, climate change and poverty. Volunteerism, experience in local government, student government or workplace will be taken into consideration. This scholarship is awarded more on the basis of character than on academic achievement or need, though these aspects will be weighed.
  • Additional Criteria: Write a 500 to 1,000 word typed essay that addresses the student’s thoughts, actions and plans toward success in the above.
  • Use of Funds: Scholarship checks are mailed directly to the recipients’ college or university for payment of tuition and fees. Award may also be used for books and needed school supplies upon presentation of receipts to JCEF for reimbursement.
  • About the Scholarship: Created in 2016 by Constance, Marian and Terese Palaia in honor of their mother, Dusty, who taught elementary school for over forty years and who worked tirelessly on issues of social justice.
